A year has passed since the Comenius project JUNIOR INVENTORS finished.
It was a project coordinated by Scoala cu clasele I-VIII "Vasile Alecsandri" (former School nr. 5) from Baia Mare, Romania.
Looking back, we remember all the nice people we met, all the nice activities we took part in, all the friends we made during the project.
All the activities showed us how similar children are, no matter their nationality, ethnic group, religion, language, social status, etc. They all like to play with their friends, they all like to be valued by their peers.
I have noticed that some of the impact I expected when writing the project can be seen today: the pupils who were involved in this project, Romanian or Rroma, from the Romanian school, have improved their self-esteem and have learned to accept those around them without discrimination. Take for example our dancers, both Romanian and Rroma, who presented beautiful traditional or modern dances in the artistic shows during the project meetings, became famous in school and respected and admired by all the pupils. Our sports teams are appreciated by all the pupils in school. Thus, in the special sports classes the groups of pupils are mixed (both Romanian and Rroma)and they enjoy learning and doing sports and playing together.
As a result of the dissemination activities and the many prizes our pupils won within this project, but also in other school and sports competitions and contests, the school has a new and improved image in the local community. Parents appreciate our program of intercultural activities and plan of desegregation and integration of all children attending our school, irrespective of their ethnic group. They have begun to accept the fact that the classes are mixed, that Romanian children learn together with Rroma children, that they are not discriminated even if some of them have special educational needs.
Many teachers from other schools have started to change their opinion about our school, considering the many prizes that the pupils from School "Vasile Alecsandri" won in the many competitions and contests they participate each year, and the fact that, when they graduate the 8th grade here, many of them go the best high-schools in the city.
"Junior inventors" was very appreciated in Romania, and it won a few prizes in the national competition called "Made for Europe", organized by the Romanian Ministry of Education: in 2007, the toys made by our pupils won the 3rd prize in the regional contest, in 2008 the "Book of games and toys" won the 1st prize at regional level and 4th prize at national level.
The Comenius multilateral project "Junior inventors" was also one of the many projects and partnerships that won us the title of EUROPEAN SCHOOL at national level, which is a very important prize in Romania.
I am sure that the project had a very good impact on our partners' schools, too.
In 2007, near the end of the first year in the project, we started an experiment resulted from the project: we organized two international art exhibitions for children: one on the 8th of April, the International Day of the Rroma people, and one on the 1st of June, The International Children's Day according to UNESCO, and a national (which later became international, too) art exhibition for Easter. They have been so successful, that in 2009 we had our 3rd edition of all the three exhibitions. ( http://juniorarts.blogspot.com)
JUNIOR INVENTORS was just the beginning of our school involvement in international partnerships.
Last school year (2008-2009), we were involved in a LLP project called "Primalingua - we speak European" (http://www.primalingua.info/Home.749+B6Jkw9MQ__.0.html) and we applied for another Comenius multilateral project "Folklore Unites Nations", written by our school, which was approved for financing in the partner countries, but, unfortunately, our school was on the reserve list.
For next year we plan to apply for a new intercultural project and hope it will be approved and financed.
We have also been involved in some Phare projects for the integration of the Rroma children in school, in the last few years, and at present we are involved in a project funded from Structural funds, as partners with Romani CRISS and other NGOs and the Romanian Ministry of Education, called "Strategic steps for the improvement of the access to education of the Rroma children", which is part of the intercultural education plan of our school for the school year 2009-2010, as well as our international art exhibitions for Christmas, Easter, 8th of April and 1st of June.
All these started with JUNIOR INVENTORS, and School "Vasile Alecsandri" from Baia Mare will get involved in other European projects from now on, too.

Prizes for our project

Junior inventors has been a very successful project.
In Romania, it was entered in some national competitions during the two years we have worked on it.
In March 2007, it got the 4th prize in the national competition "Made for Europe" at regional level.
In march 2008, it got the 1st prize in the national competition "Made for Europe" at regional level and the 4th prize at national level.
It was also one of the projects that brought the title of European school for Scoala "Vasile Alecsandri" from Baia Mare, Romania.
So we are very proud of our achievements.

Last project meeting in Baia Mare, Romania

Finally, the week 14-18 April 2008 came and we met our project partners again. It was a very nice week. We had a busy schedule and we worked a lot, but we had some fun together, too.
The teachers met to do the project and partnership evaluation. We agreed that all our project objectives have been achieved. The end products we had planned have been done. Only the DVD with the project documentary has to be finished by the end of August so that we can send the final report to our National Agencies. The project has been disseminated by several means: on the special project dissemination board, in mass media, on the internet - through the website (www.junior-inventors.com), this blog, through many email messages on various e-groups.
We believe this project has been very efficient. We all made friends with teachers or pupils from the partner schools, we learnt interesting aspects from their cultures, we worked as a team, we exchanged teaching/learning tips, etc.
The children had a great time as they were involved in many interesting activities during the visit: inter cultural dance and song shows, a theater play, sports competitions (athletics, a football match between pupils and teachers, table tennis, chess, etc.) sightseeing tour in Baia Mare and Maramures. We visited the Merry Cemetery at Sapanta, the The Pain Memorial Museum in Sighetu Marmatiei, the wonderful Monastery at Barsana, the Wood church from Surdesti, etc. They even participated in the masque ball we organized at the end of the meeting. You can see some photos in the photo album of the visit.
This week has been a celebration for the Romanian school not only for hosting the last project meeting, but also for celebrating the official change of our school's name into "Scoala cu cls. I-VIII "Vasile Alecsandri" Baia Mare. It was a moment of great joy for us and we shared our joy with our project partners. At the opening of the first day, we had important guests, such as the Mayor of Baia Mare, Mr. Cristian Anghel, who is always present at our special activities and gives us his support. There were also present our project partners from Turkey and Poland, Mr. Dragomir Ignat, the representative of the School Inspectorate, Mr. Vasile Barbul, who is a former pupil of our school, Florentina Ambrosie, the representative of our partner school from Bacau, Romania, parents, teachers, pupils, representatives of the mass media.
We also opened the International art exhibition for children called "The Resurrection Light", meant to celebrate Easter. The week passed with many interesting activities involving pupils, teachers, parents, and, of course our project partners.
As this was the last meeting, we were sorry to part, but promised to keep in touch and, why not?, maybe collaborate in other future projects.
But for now, we still have to finish the documentary and the final report to the National Agencies.

In sfarsit a sosit si saptamana 14-18 aprilie 2008, si ne-am intalnit partenerii de proiect din nou.

Project meeting in Lodz, Poland

In October 22-27, 2007, the three teams met in Lodz, Poland.
The objective of this project meeting was to plan the activities and establish the responsibilities of each team for the 2nd year of the project.
On Monday, we were met by our Polish partner, Ewelina, and we had the afternoon off to rest after the long trip to Lodz and to wander through the city.http://s172.photobucket.com/albums/w13/DanielaB_album/?action=view&current=f3c644f0.pbw http://s172.photobucket.com/albums/w13/DanielaB_album/?action=view&current=6c682a50.pbw
On Tuesday we met at the Polish school, and we presented the schools and the activities within the project so far. http://s172.photobucket.com/albums/w13/DanielaB_album/?action=view&current=4a91d64c.pbw
On Wednesday we worked on the activity plan for the second year of the project. According to this plan, the Polish school will work on the new collection of games and a game about the European countries involved in the project; the Turkish team will work on upgrading the project website, so that the e-book and all the activities and end products for each peoject year be promoted on the website; and the Romanian team will keep the diary of the project through the project blog and work on the video documentary of the project. This documentary will also be published on the website.
On Thursday we visited a historical Polish city, Torun. There we visited the ruins of the Teuton Knights Castle, a beautiful church and the Planetarium. http://s172.photobucket.com/albums/w13/DanielaB_album/?action=view&current=406852e3.pbw
http://s172.photobucket.com/albums/w13/DanielaB_album/?action=view&current=289afa1a.pbw
On Friday we went on a sightseeing tour of Lodz and we spent some nice time at the Manufaktura (a former factory, now transformed into a fashionable leisure and shopping centre). http://s172.photobucket.com/albums/w13/DanielaB_album/?action=view&current=38e7e507.pbw
We had the opportunity to taste the Polish cuisine, as each day we had lunch and dinner in another restaurant. http://s172.photobucket.com/albums/w13/DanielaB_album/?action=view&current=0bf12b0d.pbw http://s172.photobucket.com/albums/w13/DanielaB_album/?action=view&current=24a6b688.pbw http://s172.photobucket.com/albums/w13/DanielaB_album/?action=view&current=c5498c89.pbw
The students participating at the meeting were hosted by local families. In the morning they had activities at school and in the afternoon their programme was organised by the host families.
Some of the Romanian students' opinions:
"It was an unforgetable experience and great fun. At first I thought differently because the Polish were not as open as the Romanians. But in the end everything was OK. The host family was very nice. I liked the city very much. Lodz is a very old city and this makes it special. The school in Lodz was ... different. I cannot compare it with our school. But the school is clean, with nice students. The last day spent there was unforgetable: we went to the Zoo and then we had a lot of spare time, only us, the teenagers. We went to the cinema at the Manufaktura, then we had lots of fun at the leisure centre. I did not sleep at all the last night there. I walked out in the garden and took advantage of the last hours there. We made special friends there and I'm looking forward to see them again in Romania." Izabela
"I liked the trip to Lodz. But I did not like the host family, for they did not make me feel good there. The host school is nice, but the classes are not so good, because the teachers don't challenge the students to study. The thing I liked best was the flight to Warsaw. It was for the first time I travelled by plane. I was also impressed by the trip to Torun. I also liked the last day spent in Lodz, for we had it to ourselves, without the presence of the teachers. I hope April comes faster so that we can meet again." Angelica

Show must go on ...

The summer holidays came and went....
We worked hard on the activity report. We also worked hard to make the renewal of the project eligible for funding, for we wanted to finish what we started.
So, our project has recived aproval and got the grant to go on.
So the show must go on!
As any end is a new beginning, the end of summer means a new school year.
The new school year means the opportunity for the project team to reassemble and start having fun while working on this beautiful project.
We are sorry that Atilla has left the project team, but we welcome our new Turkish partner in the project, Ozden. I hope she will enjoy working with our team.

So
We are going to meet again. This time in Poland.
The meeting will take place in Lodz, in the period 22-27 October 2007.
The children are eager to meet their friends again.
Plans are made to travel, others to welcome the teams.
We are all counting the days left untill the meeting.

So
Poland, here we come!

Sper sa-i placa munca impreuna cu echipa noastra.

Deci
Ne vom intalni din nou. De data asta in Polonia.
Reuniunea de proiect va avea loc in localitatea Lodz, in perioada 22-27 octombrie 2007.

Intalnirea a avut loc in perioada 23-28 aprilie 2007 in localitatea Muş din Turcia.

Proiectul se afla in primul an de derulare. Ceilalti parteneri in proiect sunt scolile: 75.

Project meeting in Turkey

Our second project meeting took place in Muş, Turkey, in April 23-28, 2007.
We had a great time there. Atilla Gündeş, our host, together with his headmaster, Mr. Rahmetulah Yakti and their team, made our visit to Muş unforgettable. The program was very rich and interesting.
We had our technical meeting, when we discussed the details for the activities to be finished till the end of the first project year: the publishing of the book containing the collection of games, which will be done both in paper format and as an e-book on the project website, the upgrading of the website with the latest information and photos from the meeting and those with the toys the other children made; the updating of the project blog, etc.
The three project teams, from Poland, Romania and Turkey were met by the Education Authority from Muş and we had an interesting discussion about the educational systems from the three coutries.
During the Seminar organized by our hosts, the Socrates programmes were presented by the project coordinator from the Muş region, Mr. Ercan Mutlu, after which, the representatives from the three partners of project were requested to present their schools and the project "Junior Inventors". Mr. Rahmetullah Yakti, the Headmaster of the Turkish school, talked about the projects his school has been involved in. Then the Romanian school was presented by Ms. Daniela Buda, the Headmistress of the school. Mr. Michal Kulik, project coordinator, introduced the Polish school to the audience.
There was a large audience present at the seminar: many officials, headmasters of schools, pupils, teachers and parents attended it. On this occasion, the audience could admire the toys made by the children within the project.
The inter cultural exchanges between the 3 teams had several aspects: the beautiful dance show the children from the host school organized for the seminar, the fact that the visiting children were hosted by local families, which was an opportunity to compare different life styles. Another comparison item was the splendid Turkish cuisine, full of flavors and spices. Visiting the historical and cultural places offered us the occasion to talk about the common aspects throughout the history.
In Muş we visited the teachers' high school, very modern and well equipped, a kindergarten, and, of course, we visited the host school from KIRKÖY. This was a chance for headmasters to exchange experiences in running the schools.
When we visited the Turkish partner school, we met the local officials from the village, teachers and the pupils of the school, as well as the Turkish "junior inventors".
Another aspect of the inter cultural exchange was the linguistic one: by the end of the meeting, all people involved (pupils, teachers, host families) could say a few words and phrases in the four languages: English, as the communication language of the project, Turkish, Polish and Romanian. It was fun to hear people communicating, using words from the four languages.
There was also a methodological aspect of the meeting: the teachers of English from the schools from KIRKÖY and Muş gathered for a methodology workshop: the topic was "Using games in teaching English communicatively". The workshop was successful and the people gathered there decided to keep in touch in order to learn more active teaching/learning methods by exchanging such experience via the internet.
We enjoyed the visit to Turkey and made a lot of friends there.
So we think we achieved all our objectives for the first year of the project.
Next project meeting will take place in autumn in Poland, for the second year of the project.

April 2007 - 2nd project meeting - Turkey

We are preparing for the second project meeting.
It will take place inTurkey in April 22-28 2007.
The plane tickets are ready. We are very excited when we think about travelling to meet our partners again.
We are a great team.
The work on the project is also fun for the teachers and children alike.
We are also going to meet another culture.
We expect that the inter cultural aspect will have a great impact upon our children.
They will see that children in other countries are not much different than they are, just the customs of the place differ from country to country.

Projectwork update

We have been working hard on the project so far. The children are enjoying themselves while working on the project.
The research teams have been collecting the games, some of these games have already been translated into English, I mean those that will be published in the book. We also decided to try something new: an ebook, which will contain the collection of games in the four languages: English, Romanian, Turkish and Polish. By the end of the first year of the project, that is in July, we'll have the book and the ebook ready.
The primary school children have been working on making the toys.
They will be ready by the time we will have the second project meeting. The toys will be exhibited during the project meeting .
The next project meeting will take place in Turkey in April 2007.
Please leave your comments if you like our blog and website. We appreciate your feedback.

Apreciem feedback-ul oferit.

Meeting in Baia Mare November, 13 - 19, 2006

We had our first Comenius 1 school project meeting in November, 13 - 19, 2006. It was held in Baia Mare, at our school, Scoala cu clasele I-VIII nr.5 Baia Mare, as we are the co-ordinating school of the project.

In perioada 13-19 noiembrie 2006 am organizat prima reuniune de proiect scolar Comenius 1. Intalnirea a avut loc la Scoala cu clasele I-VIII nr. 5 Baia Mare, deoarece noi suntem scoala coordonatoare a proiectului.

Our project partners are:
Partenerii nostri de proiect sunt:

  • 75 YIL KIRKÖY YATILI İLKÖĞRETİM BÖLGE OKULU, KIRKÖY, TURKEY;
    and
  • LICEUM OGOLNOKSZTALCACE UMIEJETNOSCI TWORCZYCH (HIGH SCHOOL OF CREATIVE SKILLS) LODZ, POLAND.

The guests arrived on Sunday, November, 12, and Monday, November 13, and on Tuesday we had the first meeting with the whole group, at school. The children from Turkey and Poland, who attended the meeting, were welcomed and hosted by our pupils from Grade 7 A, coordinated by the classmaster, Sorin Ionescu. We worked hard all week but we also had some fun: a visit to the Merry Cemetery from Sapanta, Maramures, and a visit to the Village Museum from Sighetu Marmatiei (on Thursday).

Our teachers and students had great fun during the friendly football match they played on Tuesday evening. Of course, the students' team won! Preparing for the match, the match, our cheerleaders, all in the slide show.

Bineinteles, echipa elevilor a castigat!

Then, on Wednesday we had the official launching of the project

The most important official figure who attended our activity was Mr. Cristian Anghel, the Mayor of our city. As always, he is our best supporter in all the activities our school organizes on different occasions. Many people attended the launching of JUNIOR INVENTORS.
Our pupils were very impressed by the presentation of the partner schools and they made an impressive presentation of our school: besides the Power point presentation made by the Romanian project team, the children made a very beautiful show with songs and dances, co-ordinated by teachers from our school. Our partners say they have enjoyed their stay here and they are looking forward to meet us again.

Cateva imagini puteti vedea in album.

The next project meeting is scheduled to take place in Turkey, in April 2007. Then we'll be able to see some of the project's end products.
Urmatoarea reuniune de proiect se va tine in Turcia, in luna aprilie 2007.

- Implicarea copiilor in munca de cercetare in echipe

- Schimburile inter-culturale dintre elevii si profesorii din tarile partenere in proiect vor ajuta in combaterea rasismului si xenofobiei si vor promova toleranta fata de alti oameni.

- In mass-media locala
- Cu alte ocazii, cum ar fi “Ziua primaverii in Europa”, “Ziua Europei”, “Ziua europeana a limbilor straine”, etc.
- Pe blog-ul si website-ul proiectului.

Welcome to Junior Inventors!

Junior Inventors is a Socrates Comenius 1 School project, financed by the European Comission.

“Junior inventors” has as its main objective the discovery of the games and toys that European children, economically disadvantaged, invent to have fun and to collect them in a book to be published in English and the languages of the partner countries.
The project’s aim is to put into value the children’s creativity and inventiveness.
The research work and the collection of games will be carried out by teams of teachers and students from the European countries involved in the project, and the target groups for the research will be made of groups of children aged 6/7 - 14/15. The children’s games will be observed for some time to find out what kind of games they play in the street with their friends, the materials they use in their games. It is interesting to see if they play with ready-made materials or self-made materials.

The end products of the project will be: a book containing the games collected during the project, to be published in English and in the partner countries’ languages, a CD containing the video recording of the games, and in the case of the Romanian team, an optional class “The English Club” to be integrated in the extracurricular activity; a blog and a website.

The concrete aims of this project are:
To put into value the games and toys that economically disadvantaged children invent to have fun, and collect these games in a book to be published in English and the languages of the European partner countries.

To involve children in the research team work.
To motivate children to learn foreign languages in order to communicate with their peers from abroad. To motivate pupils and teachers to use modern information and communication technologies
To enhance cultural exchanges among pupils and teachers using children’s most favourite leisure activities: games.
To find ways of enabling the disadvantaged children to find out that other children who cannot afford expensive toys and games will share their games with them

Expected impact:
Ø The pupils will learn how to value their creative potential
Ø The pupils will be motivated to improve their foreign languages abilities in order to communicate with their peer partners
Ø The work on the project will develop pupils’ abilities to read, speak and write in English.
Ø Both teachers and pupils will be motivated to improve their skills in using information and communication technologies
Ø The pupils will learn how to work in a team and how to negotiate and co-operate within a team
Ø The teachers will be motivated to integrate the project activities in the curriculum and to use their creativity to enrich their teaching methods and share their innovative initiatives with other colleagues. They will also benefit from the information and experience exchanges with teachers from the other European project partners.
Ø The inter-cultural exchanges among the pupils and teachers will help combat racism/xenophobia and promote tolerance towards other people
Ø In the long term, the local community will benefit from the project by better understanding children’s needs for communication with adults.
Ø It will provide the teachers and educational communities information to help them counsel and guide the pupils according to their interests and skills.
Ø The project will help people realize that children can be creative enough when they want to.
Ø By opening the minds of the present students, we can ensure the development of tomorrow’s open-minded citizens.

The dissemination will be made by various means:
- By public presentations and exhibitions with students’ work and pictures of all the partner schools
- In local and regional teachers’ meetings
- In the local mass media
- In such occasions as the “Spring Day in Europe”, “Europe’s Day”, “the European Day of Foreign Languages”, etc
- On the project blog and website.
